BNY Mellon Unit Joins MiCA Register As ESMA Adds 15…

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) added 15 crypto-asset service providers to its interim MiCA register in the update dated 24 July, among them BNY SA/NV, the Belgian subsidiary of BNY Mellon, lifting the number of licensed firms across the European Union to 309.

The additions form the third batch of entries since MiCA’s transitional grandfathering period closed on 1 July, the deadline that stripped firms on older national registrations of their permission to serve European clients and prompted ESMA to order unauthorised providers to wind down their services in an orderly manner. National regulators authorise each provider and ESMA maintains the shared register, so BNY’s Belgian arm entered the list through the National Bank of Belgium rather than through ESMA directly.

BNY Mellon Enters Through Belgium

BNY SA/NV appears as one of four banking institutions in the latest batch, alongside three German cooperative banks, Spar-und Kreditbank Rheinstetten, VR-Bank Augsburg-Ostallgäu and Raiffeisenbank Falkenstein-Wörth.

The clustering of established lenders on the same list as crypto-native firms reflects a route written into MiCA, under which certain already-regulated banks and investment firms can notify their intention to provide eligible crypto services rather than apply for a separate authorisation from scratch. That same route carried Standard Chartered’s Luxembourg entity onto the register weeks earlier, in the 37-firm update that first pushed the count to 280 after the deadline.

BNY Mellon’s presence carries weight beyond a single line in a register because the firm ranks among the world’s largest custody banks, and its Belgian unit now sits inside a framework built to standardise how those services reach European clients. The register records the entity as a licensed provider without signalling which products it intends to launch, a gap that separates holding an authorisation from putting regulated crypto services in front of customers.

MiCA Register Climbs to 309

The 15 new entries pushed the interim register from 294 to 309 licensed CASPs, with Germany and Denmark each accounting for three of the latest additions. Payment and trading platforms filled much of the remainder, including BitPay, Coinify and Bleap, alongside Bulgaria’s Altcoins BG and Digital Assist, Denmark’s SafeLynx Technologies and Januar, and Latvia-registered Nodu Digital.

ESMA reported no changes to its other MiCA registers in the same update, leaving the tallies for e-money tokens, asset-referenced tokens and non-compliant entities unchanged. A licensed provider can use MiCA’s passporting mechanism to offer eligible services across the EEA on the strength of a single national approval, which turns the register into a market-access tool as much as a compliance record.

The expanding register also reflects increasing institutional participation in the framework. Earlier this month, Ripple secured full MiCA authorisation through Luxembourg’s financial regulator, while ESMA has kept up pressure on supervisory standards. In a peer review published in 2025, the regulator found that Malta’s Financial Services Authority only partially met expectations when authorising one provider under the new regime, signalling that regulatory scrutiny will continue as MiCA matures.
