TP ICAP Opens Belfast Office With Room For 150 More Jobs

TP ICAP has opened a new office in Belfast’s City Quays district, ten years after establishing its Northern Ireland operation and growing it to more than 480 employees. The facility has capacity for a further 150 jobs, according to Northern Ireland deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly. That figure describes the amount of additional growth the office can accommodate. TP ICAP did not announce 150 immediate vacancies, a hiring deadline or a plan confirming that every available position will be filled.

The Belfast workforce now covers operations, technology, data, risk, finance, compliance and business support. What began as a technology centre in 2016 has become an operational hub supporting the group’s financial markets and data businesses.

Belfast Grew From Technology Centre To Operating Hub

TP ICAP’s Belfast operation was established as financial firms were moving more technology and control functions into regional centres outside London. The city offered universities, a growing pool of technology workers and lower operating costs than the largest financial centres, while remaining within the UK legal and regulatory system.

The operation has since expanded beyond software roles. The range of functions now based in Belfast shows that the office is involved in daily processing, control and support work across the group. Employees from the location have also moved into senior positions elsewhere in TP ICAP’s network, including New York and Paris.

Nicolas Breteau, Chief Executive Officer at TP ICAP, said: “When we established our presence here a decade ago, we saw a city with ambition, a strong talent pool and enormous potential. That belief has been validated many times over. Belfast has become an integral part of our global business and the colleagues based here make a significant contribution to our success every day.”

The company has developed recruitment and training relationships with Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University, as well as community and business organizations. Representatives of both universities attended the opening alongside Belfast Harbour, Belfast City Council and local chambers of commerce.

TP ICAP operates from more than 60 offices across 28 countries. Belfast is therefore one part of a distributed network, but its workforce of more than 480 makes the site substantial enough to support functions used across several international locations rather than operate as a small local branch.

The New Office Creates Capacity, Not A Hiring Pledge

Little-Pengelly said the move creates capacity for a further 150 jobs. Her statement was more specific than TP ICAP’s own description of continued growth, but neither the company nor the Northern Ireland Executive published a recruitment schedule or breakdown of the potential roles.

The distinction matters because office capacity and announced employment are different figures. The confirmed workforce is more than 480. The additional 150 represents space for expansion rather than a disclosed headcount target with committed hiring dates.

Michelle O’Neill, First Minister of Northern Ireland, said: “Its growth over the past decade, to a workforce of more than 480 people, is a strong vote of confidence in our highly skilled talent and thriving financial and professional services sector.”

O’Neill added that the company had created jobs, developed local skills and provided career opportunities. Little-Pengelly said financial and related professional services employ more than 40,000 people in Northern Ireland. Both employment figures came from statements made at the opening.

The office expansion comes as TP ICAP continues to develop businesses outside its traditional interdealer broking base. FinanceFeeds examined that strategy when TP ICAP agreed to acquire Vantage Capital Markets. A later report noted that the Vantage transaction would add around 80 brokers to the group.

Technology And Data Are Taking A Larger Role

TP ICAP connects banks, investment firms and other institutions across rates, credit, equities, energy and commodities. Its portfolio includes the ICAP and Tullett Prebon broking businesses, the Liquidnet agency execution network and Parameta Solutions, which distributes market data and benchmarks.

That mix requires technology staff as well as brokers. Electronic execution, post-trade processing, market surveillance and data distribution depend on engineering and control functions that can be run across the group’s offices. Belfast’s combination of technology, data, risk and compliance roles places it within that operating model.

The group has continued to introduce products built around electronic trading and data. FinanceFeeds reported on TP ICAP’s RealQ platform for institutional credit trading and liquidity discovery. Parameta has also expanded the distribution of information generated by TP ICAP’s brokerage activity, including a deal under which ICE added Parameta prices to its consolidated feed.

Those products require staff who can maintain systems, administer data, monitor risk and meet regulatory obligations. The Belfast office therefore supports business lines that generate revenue elsewhere as well as functions located directly in Northern Ireland.

Belfast Expansion Follows A Decade Of Group Change

The company operating in Belfast today is broader than the business that entered the city in 2016. TP ICAP was formed through the combination of Tullett Prebon and ICAP’s global broking business. It later acquired Liquidnet, adding a buy-side network and a larger agency execution operation.

FinanceFeeds has tracked the financial effect of that mix, including the contribution from Liquidnet when weaker energy activity weighed on other revenue. Another report covered TP ICAP revenue reaching £2.35 billion as broking activity increased.

The new office does not change the group’s reporting structure or create a new business segment. Its importance is operational. TP ICAP is giving a ten-year-old regional centre room to expand after building a workforce that supports several parts of the company.

The hiring effect will become clearer only when TP ICAP publishes vacancies or a headcount target. Until then, the confirmed development is the opening of the City Quays facility, the existing workforce of more than 480 and enough space to accommodate another 150 positions if the company continues to add staff.
